A Long History and Merger Process HSB was officially established in 1982 through the merger of four universities of applied sciences in the Bremen region—the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Social Education and Social Economics, and the Faculty of Navigation. Although its history spans only a little over forty years, its educational traditions can be traced back to the late 18th century: engineering education boasts over 125 years of history, while maritime education began as early as 1799, accumulating over 225 years of rich heritage, giving the university a profound foundation.
Faculty and Programs
The university comprises five main faculties, offering approximately 70 undergraduate and master’s programs:
Economics: Offers 24 programs in areas such as management and international affairs, and management and technology.
Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering: Covers architecture, civil engineering, sustainable planning, and related fields.
Social Sciences: Focuses on social work, nursing and health, tourism, and political science.
Electrical and Computer Science: Offers programs in electrical engineering, computer science, and space engineering, with its international computer science program for women having been running for over 25 years.
Nature and Technology: Includes distinctive programs in mechanical engineering, naval and ocean engineering, marine science, aerospace engineering, and bionics.
Practice-Oriented and Internationalized
Practice-oriented is a core teaching philosophy of HSB. Over 60% of the programs include overseas study or internship opportunities. The university maintains close partnerships with over 370 to 390 universities worldwide, providing students with a broad international perspective. The university’s International Graduate Center (IGC) focuses on providing international MBA and Master’s programs, and has produced numerous graduates from around the world since its establishment in 2004.
Research Strength and Social Impact
HSB excels not only in teaching but also in applied research. The university has six research clusters focusing on future issues in technology, economics, and society, and through close collaboration with regional businesses and institutions, it serves as a key engine for regional innovation. As a member of the UAS7 alliance of leading German universities of applied sciences and a founding member of the STARS EU (European University Network), HSB holds a prominent position in German and European higher education.
