Federation University Australia (FedUni) is a government-run public university, a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and one of Australia’s three oldest educational institutions.
FedUni originated from the School of Mines Ballarat (SMB), University College Melbourne, founded in 1870, and the Ballarat Base Hospital School of Nursing, founded in 1888. From 1976 onwards, several schools, including these two, gradually merged to form the University of Ballarat. On January 1, 2014, the University of Ballarat and Monash University’s Gippsland campus officially merged to form Federation University Australia.
FedUni is the only regional public university in Victoria that simultaneously offers higher education, vocational training programs, and significant research opportunities, while also providing hundreds of interdisciplinary courses. The university’s mission is to inspire students to achieve personal success through a high-quality higher education experience.
In a ranking of 39 universities across Australia published by the Australian Department of Education, Federation University Australia ranked first in graduate starting salaries; second in student satisfaction with courses; third in teaching quality; and fifth in overall skills. It has also been rated as a “five-star” university for teaching quality by the Australian Good Universities Guide for many consecutive years.
