Mara College officially changed its name to Mara Institute of Technology (ITM) on October 14, 1967.
The Innovation and Technology Agency has developed rapidly in recent years, and its educational curriculum has been continuously expanded to meet the increasingly severe job market requirements. The development of ITM is best viewed from three stages, with a time span of 32 years. The first phase (1967~1976) was an autonomous institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Rural Development following the announcement of the college to have its own 300-acre campus in Sha Alam.
The second stage (1976-1996) was for ITM to rapidly utilize its potential as a higher education institution. This led to the passage of the “ITM Law” in 1976 that put the institute directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education.
The third stage (1996-1999) is the result of the amendment of the 1976 Act, which makes ITM equal to all universities in the country. For practical purposes, ITM was granted all the powers of a university. But its historical name remained until August 26, 1999, when ITM was authorized to issue a Ph.D.
