The university’s origins can be traced back to 1770, and after several mergers, it was officially established in 1879. Its iconic main building, built in 1884, is located in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district; this Italian Renaissance-style building is itself a landmark of the city. As the only comprehensive university of science and technology in the state of Berlin, its campuses are spread throughout western Berlin, deeply embedding academic research into this vibrant European metropolis.

Furthermore, the university boasts considerable strength in the humanities and social sciences, emphasizing interdisciplinary integration of technology and society. In 2019, the Technical University of Berlin, along with Humboldt University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin, jointly received the title of “German University of Excellence” under the name of the “University of Berlin Group,” further solidifying its position as a leading research university in Europe.
